Great Class Today

Couldn't ask for more. Only 2 blue belts and 1 white belt showed up. The two blue belts took the whole time to teach us noobs what we're doing wrong. I'm usually happy if I learn 1 new move, but I think they covered 10 new things for me. Really exciting stuff.

Triangle

  • one arm in one arm out
  • use sleeve grips to control their arms
  • pull one of their arms across your chest
  • grab their head with your leg (the one opposite the arm you're pulling)

Notes about keeping someone in your guard

  • you have to keep active, move your hips, throw them off balance, break their posture
  • open up your guard as needed
  • when you keep open guard, post your feet on their shoulders, hips, or knees

Passing their guard (option #1)

  • when their guard breaks, scoop both their legs with your arms, lock your arms
  • pull them up so their weight is on their upper back
  • grab across their gi with your right hand
  • push all your weight down on their legs while twisting them counter clockwise
  • Push their left leg with a shoulder shrug
  • their legs should slide to your left and you should slide right into side control.

Breaking someone's guard

a. Slide left leg under their right butt cheek to create some space.
b. Swing right leg away from them, twisting a little to create more space
c. Push down on their left leg so it slides away

Keep good posture when you're in someone's guard

  • Straight back, keep your head up
  • tight grip on pant legs, pull them up to keep your fists in their abdomen
  • keep your elbows close and use them to lock your arms to prevent them from pulling you in.
  • Maintain a strong base, not too wide, not too narrow
